problem, lots of big problems for mitt romney right now, but this 47% thing. if you're barack obama, as he has been doing these attack ads the last few days, he will hammer mitt romney over the head throughout this debate about 47%. if he doesn't, he's mad. because it's an incredibly powerful hammer to use, because whichever way you try and spin that, it was a disaster. he called half of the country a bunch of scrounging victims. what does mitt romney do if barack obama does that? >> mitt romney has said a couple things since, piers. the first thing he said was that was me, not my campaign. he actually took responsibility which i appreciate when a grown man says i'm sorry, i made a mistake. number two, number two, his campaign is all about 100% of america and here's what he meant. he said it was inelegantly stated but i agree, not just the president will take him to task on that but i think the debate questioners will ask him. but romney should look at that as an opportunity not to be defensive again but to explain precisely what he meant. the other thing that he really should do here is i

of the health care debate? >> i think mitt romney has it right in the sense that obama care is unpopular. pieces of it might be popular, but mitt romney's been campaigning that he would repeal obama care and replace it with pieces that are popular, but this whole idea about social issues i think is so fascinating and underreported that really it's the obama campaign and the democratic party that has tried to make this a social issues election. even turning questions of taxation into a question of fairness, not one of fiscal responsibility or sobriety because at the president himself said, you don't raise taxes in a recession, and we're still certainly struggling along in this economy. so taxation has been turned into a social issue. we saw in the mid-term election that 31% of gay men and women actually voted for the gop so. what did you see at the democratic convention? gay marriage being touted. finally, on women's issues. if you were to listen to the democratic party, apparently there's some deficit, some sortage sort a -- shortage of condoms, but women care most about the economy. democrats t

: since you're supporting romney, the candidate who is running behind, you are supporting him, right? then you also need to lower the stakes for wednesday's first of these presidential debates, like this. >> frankly, i can't remember the last time there was one of these comments that grabbed everybody's attention because frankly the candidates are too well prepared. they're well scripted. >> reporter: and like this. >> i don't think one event is going to make or break this campaign. >> reporter: but definitely governor christie, definitely not like this. >> i'll tell you, bob, thursday morning, you're going to be scratching your heads and saying, wow, we have a barn burner for the next 33 days. >> reporter: the thing is, when you say that, the president's senior adviser says stuff like this. >> they expect to come out of this with a race fundamentally changed. what does that mean? if it is going to fundamentally change, that means in seven or ten days from now you'll see ohio tied, states like iowa tied. that's what matters here. >> reporter: like they say, governor christie, there i

up. six electoral votes. everyone is important, right, ed? >> that's right. some of mitt romney's key surrogate have been here shadowing the president while he does debate prep. yesterday it was ann romney. i saw matt romney was appearing with marco rubio, one of the rising stars from florida. he's here to help turn out the hispanic vote in navy nevada. i sat down with him for an exclusive one on one. he said republicans should calm down about the polls. he believes that mitt romney's going to have a strong debate and he said the message should be very simple. take a listen. >> my pitch to voters is simple. we can't afford four more years of barak obama. we can barely afford four more months. if we have four more years of barak obama, we can't wait four years for people to find jobs or our houses to be worth what we paid for them. we can't wait four years for our kids to find job when is they graduate college. we can't wait for four more years. we can't afford it. >> marco rubio told me he thinks mitt romney, having a chance tomorrow night for the first time ever to be on the same sta

reach the high level or that bar. that is what he is trying to do. look, if romney does his job right, he will keep the president, force him to be defensive about his record and the massive unemployment, and the people that is given up looking if work, about the debt and obamacare, the massive amounts of spending. >>trace: sherry, the problem is, the problem with that, he will get the president on defensive and he will go after him and you hear a lost pundits say, you know what he needs it do he needs to go on offense and score points. rather than putting the president on his heels he needs to promote his sell. >> what we saw in the primaries he is a gentleman, letting everyone have their 15 minutes of fame, like colleagues in disagreement. he cannot do that, he has to bring his best game and be strong and be aggressive. he has to talk about obama's record he would do differently and what he stands for. he has to keep obama on defensive. you say 93 percent of the people say they will watch the debates. they written. most people will hear the one linears and the outtakes. they say they

. it could be mitt romney comes across as likeable. there's a lot of things that could go right for governor romney. there will be two more debates, not election eve. having said this the fact that i don't think the debates will change a lot, the race is close. if there's a small change, even a couple points because of the debates that could be decisive. >> heather: there is the matter of real world matters as well in terms what is going on in the real world, surrounding these debates and the times they happen, right? >> exactly right. four years ago the reason nothing changed from this point on to the rest of the election, the debates didn't matter because we already had the wall street meltdown and candidates had reacted, real world events solidified 's solid lead. we haven't had an event like that but there's things percolating in the mideast that could shake-up the race, a couple more employment reports. if employment numbers and other economic indicators muddle along, then they won't change things that much. if there is a big shift in perceptions of the economy, that will have a bigger

the xiag for the obama administration right now. he wanted to remind voters that romney and ryan would take us back to the bush era policies that got us into this mess. so he says. listen.... >> the last they were charged, congressman ryan voted for and governor romney approved, said he agreed with all the things that were done. when is the last time around? last time around, what caused this national debt? how did this all of a sudden happen? when he left we had a balanced budget and things were looking good. >> alisyn: this is just the drum beating for the next four years. >> that is too easy to fact check. president bush there is plenty of blame for overspending but nothing compared to the last three years. it was ten trillion we're now well over 16. >> not just president bush but paul ryan had some of these votes, medicare but the debt number is sticking in, under president obama $35.6 trillion increase in three years of his presidency compared to president bush's nearly 5 years over eight years. >> dave: both are bad but in retrospect. >> alisyn: do you think it's possible the day afte
